Ear Surgery (Otoplasty)

If you are considering otoplasty, also referred to as simply ear surgery, to reduce the size of your ears or set the ears back closer to the head, Dr. Leo Lapuerta, Houston plastic surgeon, board certified in plastic surgery in Houston, Texas, performs this procedure at the Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas.

Otoplasty ear surgery is primarily performed on children between the ages of 4 and 14 after the ears are fully grown, but can be performed on adults as well with no additional risks.

Dr. Lapuerta normally performs the otoplasty procedure on an outpatient basis with general anesthesia at the Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas, a Quad A certified surgical facility within the doctor's suite of offices. Dr. Lapuerta is assisted in all surgical procedures by a registered nurse (RN), a licensed surgical technician (LST) and a physician anesthesiologist. Occasionally, the ear surgery procedure may be performed as an inpatient procedure with the patient staying overnight in the hospital.

Ear surgery involves an incision in the back of the ear to expose the cartilage, which is then sculpted or removed to provide a more natural looking fold. To assist in holding the new shape, non-removable stitches are commonly used.

Recovery from otoplasty ear surgery is minimal with patients up and about within a few hours after the effects of the general anesthesia have worn off. Children may return to school within seven days or so, and adults may return to work after five days.
