Gynecomastia, a medical term derived from Greek words meaning “woman-like breasts”, is a common condition in men that is not often spoken of. It affects an estimated 40-60% of men and may affect one or both breasts. Gynecomastia is normally first noticeable during childhood and puberty. Although it has been linked to various medical problems and certain drugs, there is no known cause for male breast overdevelopment in most cases, and there is no known treatment except for liposuction or surgical removal. Male breast reduction surgery is a procedure that corrects this condition removing fat or glandular tissue and excess skin from the breasts resulting in a flatter, firmer more contoured chest.
Dr. Leo Lapuerta, a board certified plastic surgeon in Houston, Texas, performs male breast reduction surgery for men who feel self-conscious about their appearance. A small incision just under the nipple is made and excess fat and breast tissue are removed. The incision is then “feathered out” toward the edge of the breast resulting in minimal scarring that is hardly visible.
Male breast reduction surgery is normally performed as an outpatient procedure under general anesthesia. Surgery is not recommended for obese or overweight men who have not first tried to correct the condition through exercise or a weight loss program. In an initial consultation Dr. Lapuerta will provide specific instructions regarding surgical preparation. During this consultation patients should discuss any questions or concerns and expectations they may have with the doctor.
After male breast reduction surgery, patients will not experience severe pain, but will be sore and swollen for a few days. Normal activity may be resumed almost immediately, with vigorous exercise being restricted for about two weeks after surgery. A compression vest may be prescribed for up to three weeks to reduce the swelling, although some areas may remain swollen for a few months.
Male breast reduction surgery will correct the gynecomastia condition forever. Should any remaining breast tissue become enlarged again in the future, patients should contact their medical physician immediately.
