Laser Resurfacing
Serving Houston, Pearland, Sugarland and Friendswood
In laser skin resurfacing, a laser is used to remove areas of damaged or wrinkled skin, layer by layer. The laser resurfacing procedure is most commonly used to minimize the appearance of fine lines, especially around the mouth and the eyes. However, it is also effective in treating facial scars or areas of uneven pigmentation. Laser resurfacing may be performed on the whole face or in specific regions. Often, the procedure is done in conjunction with another cosmetic operation, such as a facelift or eyelid surgery.
It seems that today's generation spending more and more time in the great outdoors, and this increase in time outdoors has taken its toll on people's skin. Both men and women alike are now seeking cosmetic surgery procedures to reverse, or, at least minimize, the appearance of sun-damaged skin. Cosmetic surgery procedures can also improve the "pitted" look of acne scars and remove pre-cancerous skin growth called keratoses.
The Laser Resurfacing Process
CO2 (carbon dioxide) laser resurfacing is the latest, strongest and most aggressive form of laser treatment available for wrinkles. A good candidate for CO2 laser resurfacing will typically have deep facial wrinkles, acne scarring and uneven pigmentation. The deep wrinkles may involve the entire face or regions such as under the eyes or around the mouth.
A full-face CO2 laser resurfacing takes approximately 1 hour to perform whereas smaller regions take less than 1 hour. After cleansing the region to be treated, protective shields are placed over your eyes, and under local anesthesia or general anesthesia, laser resurfacing is performed. Following the CO2 laser resurfacing, petroleum jelly is applied generously over the region treated to facilitate healing for approximately one week. CO2 laser resurfacing is performed on an outpatient basis. You may be permitted to go home after recovery.
New developments in CO2 laser technology, based on the understanding of laser - tissue interactions, have fueled an explosive interest in CO2 laser skin resurfacing recently.
Dr. Lapuerta and his staff at the Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas have a tremendous amount of experience with the CO2 laser. The entire laser resurfacing procedure and recovery process will be explained thoroughly to you after you decide to have the procedure done. The effects of CO2 laser resurfacing are long-lasting and should be evident for years to come.
