Breast Augmentation Recovery Time and Health

Houston, Pearland, Sugar Land and Friendswood, Texas

Breast Augmentation HoustonRecovery time for breast augmentation depends on how closely you follow the post-operative instructions your breast surgeon gives you. Recovery time will be less if you avoid strenuous activities such as sports and heavy lifting for at least the first two weeks. There are several factors that determine the recovery time for breast augmentation. These factors are:

  • Where the breast implants are placed
  • What type of incision is used
  • How much time you take off from work
  • What activities you participate in after your procedure

Recovery Time for Breast Augmentation

The recovery time for breast augmentation can be anywhere from 3 to 6 months. You will want to take one or two weeks off from work to help with your recovery. The first few days will be uncomfortable and Houston breast surgeon Dr. Lapuerta will give you pain medications to help maintain your comfort. He will also give you specific instructions to aid in recovery. After the first few days, the dressing and gauze will be removed and you will be given a surgical bra to wear for the next few weeks. This bra will help keep your breasts from moving and will allow for maximum comfort and recovery.

You will want to have someone help you during the first week. It is important that you do not do any heavy lifting or strenuous activities for the first couple of weeks. You will be able to return to work after the first week. Please make sure you take the appropriate time for you to relax and recover after surgery. Some patients feel comfortable in returning to work after the first week while others opt to take additional time for recovery. Please listen to your body and take the time you need for recovery.

Breast Implant Placement Options and Recovery

There are two options for breast implant placement. These options are:

  • Subglandular placement
  • Submuscular placement

The breast implants are placed above the muscle in subglandular placement or below the muscle in submuscular placement. The placement of the breast implants affects the recovery time. Submuscular placement of the implants needs a longer recovery time because the implants are placed deeper in the chest.

The choice of placement of the implants depends on the type of breast implants used and your body type. Slimmer women with little breast tissue will want to have silicone breast implants placed with submuscular placement. Women with more breast tissue may want silicone breast implants placed with the subglandular placement.

Breast Augmentation Incision Placement Options and Recovery

Dr. Lapuerta offers three types of incisions for breast augmentation. These incision types are:

  • Inframammary
  • Periareolar
  • Transaxillary

The inframammary incision is placed in the crease where the breast and chest meet. The scar from this incision is easily hidden under the breast fold.

The periareolar incision is placed around the areola and the scar is hidden where the color of the skin changes around the areola.

The transaxillary incision is placed in the armpit and the scar is hidden under the arm.

The inframammary incision is the most common incision type. The transaxillary incision allows for the fastest recovery time because the incision is not at the breast site and the incision is not as large. Saline implants are typically used with transaxillary incisions because they can be filled after placement. Silicone implants are pre-filled and require a larger incision for placement.
