Benefits of Juvederm

Tuesday, July 5th, 2011

Juvederm is a non-surgical, minimally invasive technique for the temporary removal of facial lines and wrinkles.  Before its approval by the US Food & Drug Administration, Juvederm had been used in Europe with great results for many years.  Juvederm is a unique injectable because it is made of a molecule naturally found the human body –hyaluronic acid.  Unlike a facelift or mini-facelift, treatment with Juvederm requires very little, if any, downtime.  The procedure takes just a few minutes in the office.  The immediate, minor side effects may include some bruising or puffiness at the injection site(s), or a feeling of firmness at the injection site(s), but these go away within less than a week.  Clinical studies show that Juvederm patients have less bumps, pain and minor bruising than patients who are treated with Restylane or other dermal fillers such as ZYPLAST.  Houston physician, Dr. Leo Lapuerta, is a renowned cosmetic and plastic surgeon who can help you decide if Juvederm is right for you.  To obtain more information on Dr. Lapuerta’s unique qualifications and medical services, contact his office today.

Non-Surgical Solutions for Facial Lines, Wrinkles and Nasolabial Folds

Sunday, July 3rd, 2011

If you’ve noticed that wrinkles and lines are sneaking up on your face, then it’s time to consider a dermal filler like Juvederm to smooth things out.  Juvederm is made of hyaluronic acid, which is a natural substance in the human body.  Hyaluronic acid acts like a sponge because it holds and stores water, which creates volume in the face.  Hyaluronic acid naturally diminishes with the aging process, and that’s why we get facial lines and the nasolabial folds.  Juvederm is an injectable gel that restores your body’s hyaluronic acid.  Juvederm is administered using very fine needles to inject the gel into the areas of the face requiring treatment.  It is important to note that Juvaderm is administered by physicians who have been trained in how to use the product, so you should beware of allowing someone at the spa treat you with Juvederm.  After treatment, most patients see immediate results, such as the disappearance of nasolabial folds (“parenthses”), oral commissures (“marionette” lines), perioral lines, and wrinkles around the chin.  Most patients can expect the effects of Juvederm to last anywhere from 6-12 months.  In Houston and the surrounding areas, Dr. Leo Lapuerta is a well renowned cosmetic and plastic surgeon with over two decades of experience in helping his patients look their best.  If you have more questions about Juvederm or other cosmetic procedures (whether surgical or minimally invasive), contact the professionals at Dr. Lapuerta’s office to schedule an appointment.  You will be well taken care of!

What to Expect from Otoplasty

Friday, June 24th, 2011

After you and Dr. Lapuerta have consulted and agree that otoplasty (ear surgery) is right for you or your child, the procedure is generally performed on an outpatient basis at the Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas.  During surgery, a general anesthetic is administered by a physician anesthesiologist, and Dr. Lapuerta is assisted by a licensed surgical technician and/or registered nurse.  During surgery, and incision is made in the back of the ear, and this exposes cartilage.  The cartilage is either sculpted or removed so that the ears have a more natural looking fold.  It’s common for non-removable sutures to be used to hold the new shape of the ear.  The recovery is fairly minimal from this procedure.  Dr. Lapuerta has performed hundreds of plastic surgery procedures, and the before & after photo gallery demonstrates his success with otoplasty.  Contact the Houston office of plastic surgeon, Leo Lapuerta, M.D. to learn more about this procedure.

Otoplasty – Not Just for Dumbo

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Otoplasty is plastic surgery designed to correct problems with the ears such as: position, shape, proportion, defect at birth, or defect from an accident.  Dumbo, the adorable Disney elephant, was severely teased for his overly large ears, but they eventually became very useful. Unless you’re a flying elephant, overly large or misshapen ears are neither aesthetically pleasing nor functional for you.  If you are looking to correct your ears or your child’s ears, then Dr. Leo Lapuerta, a board certified facial plastic surgeon in Houston can help.  In children, Dr. Lapuerta performs ear surgery after the cartilage in their ears is stable, which is generally between 4 and 5 years of age, but Dr. Lapuerta will carefully examine pediatric patients to make an individual assessment.  Ear surgery is usually performed as an outpatient procedure.  For more information on otoplasty (ear surgery) for yourself or your child, contact Dr. Lapuerta’s office today to set an appointment.

Tumescent Liposuction – What is It?

Tuesday, June 21st, 2011

When asking people about their perception of liposuction, we found that many associate this cosmetic procedure with a very invasive process causing lots of pain and bruising post-operative.  These people would be right if we were talking about dry liposuction, which was the only option prior to 1985.  It’s amazing what can happen with advancements in cosmetic surgery in just 25 years!  One of the most popular techniques used in Dr. Leo Lapuerta’s office is called tumescent liposuction because it reduces blood loss, tissue trauma, and provides a smoother surface area.  The word tumescent means swollen or firm.  This process involves Dr. Lapuerta injecting local anesthesia and saline into the area(s) to be treated.  Thereafter, the fatty tissue rises to the surface and becomes firm so that Dr. Lapuerta can remove the fatty tissue without distressing the surrounding tissue.  Dr. Lapuerta is a triple board certified plastic and cosmetic surgeon in the Houston area who has more than 20 years of experience.  For more information, or to schedule an appointment, contact Dr. Lapuerta’s professional office staff today.

Vaginal Rejuvenation — Who Needs It?

Monday, June 6th, 2011

The vagina, for many women, is unfortunately one of the most discounted areas of the female body.  Many of our mothers brought us up to call the vagina some silly pet name, or even worse, “down there.”  The vagina deserves more respect – after all, it is the female sex organ, and the portal to life for infants.  Most of the time the vagina gets attention when there is a problem, such as an infection, pain or deformity.  For instance, during natural childbirth, some women experience tearing in the vaginal and perianal area.  Even women who have a timely episiotomy at childbirth may experience problems due to overstitching of the episiotomy post delivery.  This can cause painful intercourse for women, and many suffer in silence.  Houston cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Leo Lapuerta, is triple board certified and has performed numerous vaginal rejuvenation procedures, including labiaplasty.  To learn more about this procedure and find out if it is right for you, contact Dr. Lapuerta to schedule an appointment.

The Not So Ugly Truth about Labiaplasty

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

Most women are uncomfortable taking about their vagina.  They may feel it is ugly, unlovable, taboo, or something that “nice” women just don’t discuss.  These feelings are compounded in women who have problems with their vaginal area such as congenital deformities, overly large labia, or changes from weight loss or childbirth.  Houston cosmetic surgeon, Dr. Leo Lapuerta, is an understanding physician who realizes this is a sensitive issue, and puts his female patients at ease discussing this topic.  To better understand labiaplasty, its helpful to have some basic knowledge about vaginal structure.  The labia majora are external folds of skin around the vulva, and the labia minora are the smaller lips just inside the labia majora.    Most labiaplasty involves either the reduction or reshaping of the labia minora.  Reshaping is usually performed to correct asymmetrical labia minora structure.  Some women seek labiaplasty because they are embarrassed about bulges when wearing tight clothing such as jeans or a bathing suit, and labia reduction can address this issue.  Other women have medical issues such as pain resulting from larger or enlarged labia.  To learn more about labiaplasty, contact Dr. Leo Lapuerta to schedule an appointment.

Revenge Surgery Post Divorce

Wednesday, June 1st, 2011

It’s well accepted that 50% of marriages end in divorce, and recently statistics indicate that about 26% of patients seeking plastic surgery are recently divorced.  “Revenge surgery” occurs when a recently divorced individual seeks plastic surgery to show the other spouse that he/she is desirable or a hot item on the dating market.  Whether there is a correlation between divorce and revenge surgery would require a sociological study, which is beyond the scope of this story.  Dr. Leo Lapuerta was interviewed by FOX News Houston on May 28, 2011 regarding revenge surgery.  Dr. Lapuerta stressed that plastic surgery is a serious medical procedure and should not be undergone based on anger, bitterness or other negative emotions.  Dr. Lapuerta advised that plastic surgery is not something to rush into with a poor mindset.  In fact, Dr. Lapuerta would advise such patients to delay plastic surgery until they are on a more even keel.  Dr. Lapuerta acknowledged that sometimes his plastic surgery patients are divorced, but of those most are seeking procedures to feel better about themselves and to get back into the social scene – not to make the ex-spouse jealous.  Whether you’re seeking plastic surgery to boost your self-confidence post-divorce or to refresh your appearance, contact Dr. Leo Lapuerta to set an appointment.
