Tumescent Liposuction – What is It?
Tuesday, June 21st, 2011
When asking people about their perception of liposuction, we found that many associate this cosmetic procedure with a very invasive process causing lots of pain and bruising post-operative. These people would be right if we were talking about dry liposuction, which was the only option prior to 1985. It’s amazing what can happen with advancements in cosmetic surgery in just 25 years! One of the most popular techniques used in Dr. Leo Lapuerta’s office is called tumescent liposuction because it reduces blood loss, tissue trauma, and provides a smoother surface area. The word tumescent means swollen or firm. This process involves Dr. Lapuerta injecting local anesthesia and saline into the area(s) to be treated. Thereafter, the fatty tissue rises to the surface and becomes firm so that Dr. Lapuerta can remove the fatty tissue without distressing the surrounding tissue. Dr. Lapuerta is a triple board certified plastic and cosmetic surgeon in the Houston area who has more than 20 years of experience. Liposuction for the Chin
Monday, June 20th, 2011
Whether you’ve got a double chin, triple chin, or a sagging chin, it’s not good for your profile or your overall image. So, what’s a person to do since exercising away loose skin and fat from the chin is not an effective solution? If this description sounds like you, then consider having liposuction for your chin. When people think of liposuction, they usually envision fat taken from the thighs, abdomen and buttocks, but fat can be removed from delicate areas of the face as well. Fat is removed with a small cannula, and the end result is tighter skin and removal of fat so that the jaw line is cleanly defined. A complimentary procedure often performed with liposuction around the chin is a neck lift. Before you decide to have plastic surgery, be sure to research your procedure and Houston area plastic surgeons before making a commitment. Dr. Leo Lapuerta is triple board certified and has performed numerous plastic and cosmetic surgery procedures to help his patients put their best face forward. For more information, contact Dr. Leo Lapuerta’s office to schedule an appointment.

The Benefits of Liposuction
Friday, June 17th, 2011
Liposuction is a surgical procedure used to contour the body by removing deposits of fat and cellulite from between the skin and muscle. Areas where people commonly deposit this annoying excess fat include the abdomen, buttocks, hips, upper arms, back, medial thigh, and even the knee. The ideal candidate for liposuction is someone who employs a healthy exercise routine and eats a balanced diet. Liposuction is not meant to be a cure for obesity, though some obese patients have benefited tremendously from the procedure. The results following liposuction are immediately noticeable and long lasting so long as the patient maintains a healthy lifestyle. Many patients are amazed because they are able to wear clothes that have been too tight for years (like those skinny jeans from college), or they feel comfortable sporting a bikini for the first time since the age of 19. Houston plastic surgeon, Dr. Leo Lapuerta, has performed countless liposuction procedures as evidenced by his patient before and after photo gallery, and he has over 20 years of experience in plastic and cosmetic surgery. Additionally, Dr. Lapuerta uses the Tumescent liposuction procedure. For more information on a liposuction procedure, contact his office today for an appointment.

Liposuction – What it Does and Does Not Do
Monday, May 2nd, 2011
Liposuction is a surgical procedure that contours areas of the body where excess fat deposits are stored. Sometimes genetics are against us, and despite being physically fit and eating a balanced diet, we cannot seem to shed fat deposits in certain areas such as the arms, back, or abdomen. Liposuction performed by a board certified plastic surgeon can assist an otherwise healthy patient rid himself/herself of unwanted fat deposits. As with many surgical procedures, liposuction is not a panacea for all. Liposuction is not a cure or treatment for obesity. Obese patients should seek assistance from their family doctor and/or a bariatric physician due to their special needs. Liposuction it is also not a substitute for exercise and eating a balanced diet. Patients who seek liposuction as a replacement for diet control will likely be disappointed by the long-term results. It is important to be honest with your doctor about what you want from the procedure and what you do to stay fit. Dr. Leo Lapuerta can answer all your questions regarding liposuction. Dr. Leo Lapuerta is a triple board certified physician serving the Houston area, including locations in Pearland and Katy.

Does liposuction yield permanent results?
Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011
Where there is life there will be change and nothing about the human body is permanent. Having said that, there are some permanent changes that are achieved using liposuction. If you maintain a constant weight, your liposuction results will be permanent. Your body contour may change nonetheless because aging may affect your skin and other factors in maintaining your body contour.
The one permanent change you can expect from liposuction is the removal of fat cells. Fat cells do not grow back. If you gain weight, the distribution of fat cells may be different than it was before the procedure.
If you eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and exercise well you can expect to maintain your new shape indefinitely. Staying hydrated and avoiding exposure to the sun will help keep your skin smooth and elastic. Dr. Lapuerta can recommend skin care products that will prolong the benefits of liposuction and enrich the healthy state of your skin.
Aging will happen regardless, and your shape will change as you age. With care, that shape will not include fatty bulges. The right kinds and amounts of exercise will help keep your muscles toned.

Is liposuction the recommended treatment for obesity?
Friday, March 18th, 2011
Many people ask Dr. Lapuerta if he recommends liposuction as a treatment for obesity or as an alternative to bariatric surgery. Unfortunately, weight loss is not that easy, and liposuction’s limitations prevent it from being a treatment for obesity. The maximum amount of weight you could expect to lose in a single liposuction treatment would be about ten pounds, and over the short term at least you will gain some of that back in the fluid used for liposuction. Liposuction can improve your appearance significantly, but is sufficient only to target specific pockets of fat and to enhance body contours.
Liposuction Benefits for an Obese Person
This is not to say that an obese person cannot benefit from liposuction for other purposes. If you are obese and your weight has been stable for some time, you might benefit from liposuction in specific areas to improve your shape, or for health reasons.
Alternatives to Liposuction for an Obese Person
If you have rolls and folds, you may be prone to rashes or infections where your skin creases. If that is the case, you may benefit from both liposuction and a tummy tuck or body lift to remove the excess skin entirely. One way to find out for sure is to schedule a consultation with plastic surgeon Dr. Leo Lapuerta who will explain the benefits, limits and alternatives to liposuction to you based upon your body, weight, and potential results.

Who would be a good candidate for liposuction?
Monday, March 14th, 2011
If you are thinking about having liposuction, one of the first things you need to establish is whether you are a good candidate for liposuction. As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, you must consider your overall health, your goals and expectations, and whether you can comply with the time and care needed for recovery. Liposuction can potentially improve your appearance, but you must have realistic expectations about the outcomes.
General guidelines for people that may be good candidates for liposuction:
- Eats a healthy diet
- Gets regular exercise
- Is not excessively obese, expecting a weight loss solution
- Has realistic expectations of liposuction
- Is in general good health
- Does not have chronic disease such as diabetes or autoimmune disease
- Has stubborn pockets of fat that liposuction can improve
- Does not expect to lose more than 8 to 10 pounds of fat with liposuction
- Does not expect perfection
- Can be any age
One method that cosmetic surgeon Dr. Lapuerta uses is tumescent liposuction because it requires less anesthesia and causes less bleeding. Otherwise, the risks are similar to those of any liposuction method. A good candidate for liposuction at our facility would meet the same requirements for any liposuction method.
If you would like to schedule a liposuction consultation at one of our clinics near Houston, Texas, please contact Dr. Lapuerta at the Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas today.

What are the different kinds of fat transfer procedures?
Thursday, November 25th, 2010
Fat transfer procedures are most commonly used for augmenting the buttocks, fine line wrinkles on the face and for reconstructive purposes. These procedures are very popular and are practiced worldwide. Within our practice in this past year, we have performed 100% more fat transfer procedures than last year.
For the buttock augmentation, we do whole body liposuction and then use the fat to enhance the buttocks. While downsizing other areas of the body and enlarging the buttocks, this gives women a more desirable, feminine shape. For wrinkles on the face, same approach only we are using the fat to fill in the wrinkles on the face.
Fat transfers are also used for reconstructive procedures such as indentations or irregularities of the body. Liposuction is performed, the fat is separated and cleaned and set one ice to keep sterile. Then the fat is put into 60cc syringes and then injected to the areas of the body.
For more information on fat transfers or any other plastic surgery questions, please contact Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Leo Lapuerta and schedule a consultation today.

How would you define a fat transfer plastic surgery?
Thursday, November 25th, 2010
A fat transfer procedure is using liposuction to extract fat from a certain area of the body and using it to correct and fill in other areas of the body. The results are permanent but sometimes multiple procedures are sometimes needed to get the full correction for the area of concern.
