Buttock Augmentation Leads to Firmer Assets

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Cosmetic surgery technology has evolved, allowing patients unsatisfied with their backside to contour it to their liking.  While some surgeons use buttock implants, an improved technique used by Houston cosmetic surgeon Dr. Leo Lapuerta involves a special fat transfer technique using the patient’s own fat.  Fat is taken from a donor area of the patient’s body such as the abdomen or thighs.  The fat is then processed and injected into small incisions in different layers of the buttock during the surgical procedure.  Fat transfer for buttock augmentation produces more natural and aesthetically pleasing result, and it also eliminates the need to implant a foreign object into the patient’s buttocks.  While most patients do not have negative reactions to today’s implants, the patient will not have a reaction to his/her own fat.  Buttock augmentation allows both women and men to have a smoother, more shapely and firmer rear end.

Fat Transfers to Plump It Up

Wednesday, April 13th, 2011

Cosmetic surgery options are always evolving, and perhaps one of the most innovative procedures is fat grafting or transfer — basically using our own fat to plump and smooth out facial imperfections.  There are a wide variety of injectables on the market, but a small percentage of the population may have an allergic reaction to them, or some patients may not wish to have a foreign substance injected into their bodies.   In Houston, Dr. Lapuerta is experienced in collecting and refining fat tissue from areas such as the thighs or tummy.  The tissue is then liquefied to prepare it for injection into the desired site.  A great example of this technique is the episode of Sex and the City where the flamboyant character, Samantha Jones, had fat removed from her rear end to plump her lips.  The patient’s own fat is a great substance to plump the lips, to smooth out creases on the face, and to plump other areas of the body needing a little pop, such as the cheeks or chin.

Are Fat Transfers Safe?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

One of the things Dr. Lapuerta loves about fat transfers is how safe they are. While there is always some risk with any medical procedure, fat transfers are among the safest. Fat transfers make use of your own body fat as filler eliminating the possibility of allergic reaction to the injected material.

Fat transfers are commonly used to plump, shape or smooth your body contour:

  • Facial areas around the nose, cheeks, mouth and lips
  • Buttocks augmentation
  • Calf augmentation
  • Hands and fingers

r are minimal, and mostly involve the puncture sites where fat is extracted or injected. Using sterile procedures established by standards of practice, the risk of infection at a puncture site is minimal. Some people experience a little soreness or swelling. Others might experience an allergic reaction to the anesthetic used to numb the puncture sites.

The biggest risk seems to be the complete reabsorbtion of the injected fat, losing the benefit of the treatment. Rare but possible risks include:

  • Discoloration at the injection site
  • Distortion if overcorrected
  • Calcification
  • Bleeding or blood clot at a puncture site
  • Scar tissue
  • Fat embolism if fat is mistakenly injected directly into a blood vessel

Again, Dr. Lapuerta stresses the importance of choosing your plastic surgeon carefully. The more training, experience and satisfied clients your cosmetic surgeon has, the more assurance you have that he can perform your procedures satisfactorily.

Choosing a Fat Transfer Surgeon

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Have you been thinking about a fat transfer procedure for a buttocks augmentation, or to plump your lips or cheeks? Have you given the same amount of thought to which cosmetic surgeon will do your procedure? As one of the least invasive procedures, a fat transfer is none-the-less a surgical procedure and deserves the same cautious preparation as any surgery. Choosing your fat transfer surgeon can be the most important first step you take.

The fat transfer procedure sounds simple enough, but much training and experience is required to give you the optimum results you hope for. In addition to training and experience, your plastic surgeon should have highly developed creative-artistic vision and skills.

Fat must be harvested from the right areas of your body, and then processed properly. Your cosmetic surgeon then must inject the processed fat in the right places using the right amounts to give you the most flattering body contour. To do this, he must be able to envision what amount of initial swelling will take place, and how much reduction will follow, leaving what shape for your skin to contour around.

Technical knowledge and experience, while essential to predicting the end result after healing is complete, is not enough to do this highly creative work. Look for a cosmetic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, can show you fat transfer surgery before and after photos, has at least five years experience, and can let you speak to some of his satisfied patients.

Fat Transfer Surgery

Saturday, December 18th, 2010

Sometimes, less is more. That is exactly the case with fat transfer surgery. It is a less intense cosmetic surgery procedure than other enhancement options. Fat transfer surgery is also less invasive, less painful, requires less recovery time and uses less artificial implant material. In fact, there is no artificial implant material because the fat that is transferred is entirely native to you. It is your own fat.

Much can be achieved with little fat in fat transfer surgery. Lips can be plumped, sunken cheeks filled to a healthy fullness, eye lids filled, buttocks plumped and rounded, arms, calves and hands filled out to look full, healthy and youthful again.

Recovery time is less with fat transfer surgery and you will heal faster and resume normal activities sooner. Bruising and discomfort is minimal and resolves quickly so you will begin to enjoy the benefits of your fat transfer procedure sooner.

Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Lapuerta can transform your appearance with the “less is more” fat transfer surgery. In just a few hours you will be enjoying your new, more youthful appearance.

Questions about Fat Transfer

Tuesday, December 14th, 2010

Also known as fat injection, fat transfer uses your own fat to restore volume to areas of your body that have lost definition or plumpness. Fat transfer is a cosmetic surgery procedure that is used to improve the fullness of your lips, chin, neck and buttocks. It also treats wrinkles and areas like cheeks or hands that tend to look sunken with age or weight loss.

How long does is a fat transfer procedure takeperformed?

To begin the process, Dr. Lapuerta will give you a local or topical anesthetic to numb the areas for fat removal and reinjection. Once fat has been removed from areas such as your abdomen, it is purified and processed to the consistency of a facial filler. Using a different needle, Dr. Lapuerta injects the refined fat into the new areas to recontour your face or body. This process is continued until all areas you selected meet your desired outcome. The entire fat transfer procedure takes just a few hours.

How long with the fat transfer last?

As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, the results of fat transfer tend to vary by patient. In general, you can expect your results to last a very long time, if not permanently. Since the fat transfer procedure uses your own fat, you can have refinements as needed without any worry.

What should patients consider before considering fat transfer surgery?

Sunday, November 28th, 2010

As with any plastic surgery procedure, a patient should be at a stable weight that they are comfortable with. Any weight gain or loss can dramatically effect the outcome of the procedure. The patient should seek plastic surgery after all forms of diet and exercise have been exhausted. In turn, for the fat transfer procedure, a patient must have enough donor tissue to have transferred. The doctors examination will determine this.

If you are interested in plastic surgery and live in the Houston Texas area, please schedule a consultation with plastic surgeon Dr. Leo Lapuerta today.

What are the pros and cons of these different fat transfer surgeries?

Friday, November 26th, 2010

The advantages of fat transfer procedures are that they are safe, permanent, and help improve one’s appearance. Using your own tissue is the safest way to do these procedures. Any foreign substance such as silicone, the body will reject and a person can become very sick. Another advantage is that these procedures are permanent. Hyloronic acids are sometimes used but are not permanent.

One of the disadvantages is that sometimes more than one procedure is needed to get the full desired look. Once the fat is transferred, about 50% of the fat will not survive.

If you are interested in the fat transfer procedure and would like to speak to a triple board certified plastic surgeon about your options, contact our Houston plastic surgery office today.

What are the different kinds of fat transfer procedures?

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

Fat transfer procedures are most commonly used for augmenting the buttocks, fine line wrinkles on the face and for reconstructive purposes. These procedures are very popular and are practiced worldwide. Within our practice in this past year, we have performed 100% more fat transfer procedures than last year.

For the buttock augmentation, we do whole body liposuction and then use the fat to enhance the buttocks. While downsizing other areas of the body and enlarging the buttocks, this gives women a more desirable, feminine shape. For wrinkles on the face, same approach only we are using the fat to fill in the wrinkles on the face.

Fat transfers are also used for reconstructive procedures such as indentations or irregularities of the body. Liposuction is performed, the fat is separated and cleaned and set one ice to keep sterile. Then the fat is put into 60cc syringes  and then injected to the areas of the body.

For more information on fat transfers or any other plastic surgery questions, please contact Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Leo Lapuerta and schedule a consultation today.

How would you define a fat transfer plastic surgery?

Thursday, November 25th, 2010

A fat transfer procedure is using liposuction to extract fat from a certain area of the body and using it to correct and fill in other areas of the body. The results are permanent but sometimes multiple procedures are sometimes needed to get the full correction for the area of concern.

If you are interested in plastic surgery and live in the Houston area, please contact Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Leo Lapuerta.
