Thursday, March 24th, 2011

With age your facial features take on entirely new forms. Weight gain and loss can also affect your neck and facial features. These changes may alter your self image, or even the impression you make on other people. A  face lift offers many benefits to overcome these unwanted effects.

If your appearance has a significant effect on your job performance, you might benefit from a face lift. Many people in sales, modeling, acting, or other high profile positions find that their success is based in large part on their appearance. Other benefits of a facelift include:

  • Regain a more youthful look
  • Recapture a more positive and attractive appearance
  • Correct deep wrinkles and creases
  • Eliminate sagging skin
  • Tighten sagging muscles
  • Encourage a healthy lifestyle to maintain the gains
  • Improve your self-image and confidence

If you care well for your body after a face lift, you can expect the results to benefit you for as long as ten years. Dr. Lapuerta and his staff are available to help you choose the best maintenance care and skin care products long after your face lift surgery.

Does liposuction yield permanent results?

Tuesday, March 22nd, 2011

Where there is life there will be change and nothing about the human body is permanent. Having said that, there are some permanent changes that are achieved using liposuction. If you maintain a constant weight, your liposuction results will be permanent. Your body contour may change nonetheless because aging may affect your skin and other factors in maintaining your body contour.

The one permanent change you can expect from liposuction is the removal of fat cells. Fat cells do not grow back. If you gain weight, the distribution of fat cells may be different than it was before the procedure.

If you eat a healthy diet, drink plenty of water and exercise well you can expect to maintain your new shape indefinitely. Staying hydrated and avoiding exposure to the sun will help keep your skin smooth and elastic. Dr. Lapuerta can recommend skin care products that will prolong the benefits of liposuction and enrich the healthy state of your skin.

Aging will happen regardless, and your shape will change as you age. With care, that shape will not include fatty bulges. The right kinds and amounts of exercise will help keep your muscles toned.

If you would like to schedule a liposuction consultation near Houston, Texas, please contact Dr. Lapuerta at the Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas today. We serve patients in Houston, Pearland, Sugar Land and Friendswood, Texas.

Who would be a good candidate for liposuction?

Monday, March 14th, 2011

If you are thinking about having liposuction, one of the first things you need to establish is whether you are a good candidate for liposuction. As with any cosmetic surgery procedure, you must consider your overall health, your goals and expectations, and whether you can comply with the time and care needed for recovery. Liposuction can potentially improve your appearance, but you must have realistic expectations about the outcomes.

General guidelines for people that may be good candidates for liposuction:

  • Eats a healthy diet
  • Gets regular exercise
  • Is not excessively obese, expecting a weight loss solution
  • Has realistic expectations of liposuction
  • Is in general good health
  • Does not have chronic disease such as diabetes or autoimmune disease
  • Has stubborn pockets of fat that liposuction can improve
  • Does not expect to lose more than 8 to 10 pounds of fat with liposuction
  • Does not expect perfection
  • Can be any age

One method that cosmetic surgeon Dr. Lapuerta uses is tumescent liposuction because it requires less anesthesia and causes less bleeding. Otherwise, the risks are similar to those of any liposuction method. A good candidate for liposuction at our facility would meet the same requirements for any liposuction method.

If you would like to schedule a liposuction consultation at one of our clinics near Houston, Texas, please contact Dr. Lapuerta at the Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas today.

Are Fat Transfers Safe?

Wednesday, February 16th, 2011

One of the things Dr. Lapuerta loves about fat transfers is how safe they are. While there is always some risk with any medical procedure, fat transfers are among the safest. Fat transfers make use of your own body fat as filler eliminating the possibility of allergic reaction to the injected material.

Fat transfers are commonly used to plump, shape or smooth your body contour:

  • Facial areas around the nose, cheeks, mouth and lips
  • Buttocks augmentation
  • Calf augmentation
  • Hands and fingers

r are minimal, and mostly involve the puncture sites where fat is extracted or injected. Using sterile procedures established by standards of practice, the risk of infection at a puncture site is minimal. Some people experience a little soreness or swelling. Others might experience an allergic reaction to the anesthetic used to numb the puncture sites.

The biggest risk seems to be the complete reabsorbtion of the injected fat, losing the benefit of the treatment. Rare but possible risks include:

  • Discoloration at the injection site
  • Distortion if overcorrected
  • Calcification
  • Bleeding or blood clot at a puncture site
  • Scar tissue
  • Fat embolism if fat is mistakenly injected directly into a blood vessel

Again, Dr. Lapuerta stresses the importance of choosing your plastic surgeon carefully. The more training, experience and satisfied clients your cosmetic surgeon has, the more assurance you have that he can perform your procedures satisfactorily.

Choosing a Fat Transfer Surgeon

Friday, February 11th, 2011

Have you been thinking about a fat transfer procedure for a buttocks augmentation, or to plump your lips or cheeks? Have you given the same amount of thought to which cosmetic surgeon will do your procedure? As one of the least invasive procedures, a fat transfer is none-the-less a surgical procedure and deserves the same cautious preparation as any surgery. Choosing your fat transfer surgeon can be the most important first step you take.

The fat transfer procedure sounds simple enough, but much training and experience is required to give you the optimum results you hope for. In addition to training and experience, your plastic surgeon should have highly developed creative-artistic vision and skills.

Fat must be harvested from the right areas of your body, and then processed properly. Your cosmetic surgeon then must inject the processed fat in the right places using the right amounts to give you the most flattering body contour. To do this, he must be able to envision what amount of initial swelling will take place, and how much reduction will follow, leaving what shape for your skin to contour around.

Technical knowledge and experience, while essential to predicting the end result after healing is complete, is not enough to do this highly creative work. Look for a cosmetic surgeon who is certified by the American Board of Plastic Surgery, can show you fat transfer surgery before and after photos, has at least five years experience, and can let you speak to some of his satisfied patients.

If you would like to learn more about fat transfer in Houston, Texas, please contact Dr. Lapuerta at the Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas today.

Body Contouring Questions

Tuesday, December 28th, 2010

What are considered body contouring procedures?

When people talk about body contouring it gets confusing because the body can be contoured in several places, and can involve several different procedures. Body contouring procedures include any of the following:

•     Hip lift

•     Buttocks lift

•     Upper arm lift

•     Tummy Tuck

•     Body lift

•     Buttocks augmentation

•     Liposuction/liposculpting

•     Fat transfer

Most of the lift procedures involve surgically removing excess skin to eliminate any sagging. In the case of a tummy tuck, the abdominal muscles are also tightened.

Fat transfer procedures involve removing your own fat with a syringe, processing it, and then injecting it so to plump areas that need more volume and contouring.

What procedures are not considered to be body contouring procedures?

Although Dr. Leo Lapuerta does breast lifts, lip augmentation, face lifts and fat transfers to plump various facial areas or calves, these are not normally considered to be among the body contouring procedures. A breast lift technically is a body contouring procedure but is usually considered separately because it is more closely related to other breast surgery.

If you would like to schedule a body contouring consultation at one of our clinics near Houston, Texas, please contact Dr. Lapuerta at Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas today.

Breast Augmentation Incision Options

Wednesday, December 22nd, 2010

If you are considering breast enhancement, you will have many decisions to make about your surgery. It should be comforting to know that Dr. Leo Lapuerta will take his time going over the various breast augmentation incision options with you, and discuss how each is likely to affect your procedure and outcome. Of the several approaches, each has distinct advantages and disadvantages.

Incision Options for Breast Augmentation

  • Inframammary Incision – Made in the crease below your breast where it meets your chest, allowing the scar to be virtually unseen and easily hidden by clothing.
  • Periareolar Incision – Made around the areolaso that scarring blends in with the darker skin. Drawbacks include residual numbness of the nipple and a higher risk of complications with regard to breastfeeding.
  • Transaxillary Incision – Made in the armpit so the scarring is very inconspicuous. This incision type is the most difficult for breast implant placement.

Dr. Lapuerta will explain how all of these factors work together to give you superior breast enhancement results, and how your choice of incision will affect your outcome. He will also explainhow to avoid complications by following proven post-operative recovery routines and techniques.

If you would like to learn more about breast augmentation incision options, please contact experienced plastic surgeon Dr. Leo Lapuerta at The Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas, serving Houston, Pearland, Sugar Land and Friendswood, Texas today.

Questions about Cosmetic Surgery Anesthesia

Tuesday, November 30th, 2010

What kind of anesthesia does Dr. Lapuerta administer for cosmetic surgery?

Dr. Lapuerta is very concerned with your well being. He uses IV anesthesia rather than gas anesthesia for cosmetic surgery. This method allows the anesthesia and pain medications to be administered through an IV while you continue to breath comfortably and without assistance during your plastic surgery procedure.

What are the benefits of IV anesthesia?

There are several benefits to using IV anesthesia instead of gas anesthesia including:

  • Less post-surgery nausea
  • Faster recovery from the “out of it” feeling
  • Pain can be more easily controlled and monitored
  • Lower risk of bleeding
  • Greatly reduced risk of complications
  • You can generally go home within an hour following surgery

Will I feel any pain under anesthesia?

Since the IV anesthesia allows Dr. Lapuerta to more easily monitor and administer your pain medications simultaneously, you should not feel any pain while sedated during your plastic surgery. Your pain levels are continuously monitored, however, so Dr. Lapuerta can easily increase your medications as needed.

Dr. Lapuerta makes every effort to ensure that you are a good candidate for IV anesthesia. He uses IV sedation procedures to ensure your greatest comfort and safety during and after your cosmetic surgery.

To learn more about cosmetic surgery anesthesia in Friendswood, Sugar Land, Pearland or Houston, Texas, please contact Dr. Lapuerta at The Plastic Surgery Institute of Southeast Texas today.

How much pain is expected after abdominoplasty surgery?

Sunday, November 21st, 2010

The pain following abdominoplasty is similar to c-section. Patients describe the pain as a very sore and tight pain. Several patients complain of lower back pain because for the first 10 days or so, the patient has to walk bent over. A pain pump is placed in the lower abdomen to keep the area numb for the first couple days which makes it easier to recover in the patient’s home.

If you would like to know more about the abdominoplasty surgery and live in the Houston Texas area, please contact cosmetic surgeon Dr. Leo Lapuerta and schedule a consultation.
